St. John Bosco - Memorial

Don Bosco was born on 16 August 1815 at Becchi, Castelnuovo d'Asti, Piedmont, Italy as Giovanni Melchior Bosco. He was the youngest son of Francesco Bosco (1780–1817) and Venerable Margeret Occhiena. He had two elder brothers, Antonio (a.k.a.Anthony) and Giuseppe (a.k.a. Joseph). His mother the Venerable Margeret Occhiena was a great influence on young Bosco.

As a boy, Don Bosco was not meek by nature nor was he timid. He always dreamt of dedicating his life to the service of youth and this motivated him to study. ‘Perhaps, one day I might become a priest!’ but his brother Anthony did not like the idea. One day when he returned home from work, he saw John at the table reading and studying. John not only did his fair share in the fields but he also took a few moments of quiet reading and studying at the kitchen table.

John narrates an incident that occurred; “Despite all my work and good will, Anthony still was not happy. One day he announced very decisively, first to my mother and then to my brother Joseph, that he could stand it no more. “I’ve had it up to here,” he blustered. “I’ve had my fill of this grammar business. Look at me,” he said, “I’ve grown big and strong without ever setting eyes on such books.”

“That’s nonsense! Our donkey is bigger and stronger that you are, and he never went to school either. Do you want to be like him?” This so angered Anthony that only speed saved me from a volley of blows and smacks. (From the Memoirs of the Oratory by Don Bosco pg. 41-42)

When Don Bosco was nine years of age he had a vision, the “woman with a majestic bearing” said, “Make yourself humble, strong and robust!” John was an extrovert but he needed to be humble. He soon learned its value and his serene sense of humour drew anyone to him. He remained a contemplative even in the very mundane tasks of daily life.

In another dream, Don Bosco was given a glimpse of heaven. There he saw youngsters who had practiced the virtue of purity. His guide led him through a meadow bedecked with various scented flowers and there he beheld a vision of youngsters who had preserved their baptismal innocence: “The shepherd said to me: ‘these boys have preserved untainted the lily of purity. They still wear the spotless robe of innocence.’ I stood entranced. Nearly all wore floral wreaths of indescribable beauty. Each flower was a cluster of thousands of tiny, brightly hued florets of unbelievable charm, each with more than a thousand colours…The boys wore ankle-length garments of dazzling white embroidered with flowers like those in their crowns. Sparkling light radiated from these flowers that bathed the boys in brightness and reflected their comeliness…Never could I imagine such a fascinating, bewildering spectacle in heaven itself! (EBM 8, 362-363)

In another beautiful vision at Lanzo Torinese in 1876, John saw Dominic Savio. “Dominic Savio was draped in a special robe, a white tunic that descended to his feet; it was all interwoven with gold and diamonds. A broad red sash girded his waist…His head was crowned with roses; he looked like an angel!” A heavenly chorus explained the significance of the white robes and the red sash. “These are those who have girded themselves with mortification and have washed their garments in the blood of the Lamb.” Don Bosco further says, “I understood the red band, the colour of blood. It was the symbol of great sacrifices made, strenuous efforts almost to the point of martyrdom to preserve the virtue of purity and to keep themselves chaste for the Lord. It was also a symbol of penance undertaken to purify their souls of sin.” (From the Life of Dominic Savio written by Don Bosco)

Pope Paul VI says, “In the saints we are looking for what unites them to us rather than what sets them apart form us. We want them to come down to the level of us ordinary people, immersed in everyday experiences that are not always edifying; we want to see them as brothers who have experienced our misery and can understand our intimate feelings and the heavy burdens of our earthly condition.” (3 Nov. 1963) John Bosco was truly one such saint, he was always a man among men. -xx-

His advice to youngsters:

Fly from bad companions as from the bite of a poisonous snake. If you keep good companions, I can assure you that you will one day rejoice with the blessed in Heaven; whereas if you keep with those who are bad, you will become bad yourself, and you will be in danger of losing your soul. - Saint John Bosco

The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1)

“Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.”
(
Matthew 5:1)

Jesus starts his preaching with ‘blessings’ in the Gospel of Matthew. He teaches us the Beatitudes. It is a way of life that leads to the Kingdom of God. If you have been to the Mount of the Beatitudes on the Sea of Galilee, you will notice the beautiful surrounding, lush green pastures and the gentle slop down to the sea. It is a natural amphitheatre, a place for relaxation where you can enjoy the beauty of God’s creation. In short a place of peace and rest. By living the Beatitudes, we too reach a place of peace, of reward and the surety in the Kingdom of God.

Heaven is a place where there is no rich and poor, learned or uneducated, no tears, no more sadness. The riches and prestigious things that matter so much in this world simply lose their value up there. Jesus calls us to simplicity and poverty of spirit. He calls the sorrowing blessed for they bear the humility of His passion. Blessed are the justice seekers for they are the ones who look after their helpless brethren through the compassionate eyes of God. Blessed are the merciful, the forgiving ones, who do not bring to account the hurt they suffer when working for the Kingdom. They reflect a merciful God, lightening the burdens of others. Blessed are the pure of heart, the non-judgmental, non-envious, who seek God’s face in everything they do. Their eyes are always fixed on God’s Kingdom. They have seen the image of God in others and assuredly, they will see God when they enter into Paradise. Blessed are the peacemakers, who live in harmony with one another, bearing patiently their own crosses as well as bringing consolation to those who are suffering along the way. They are mirrors that reflect the Prince of Peace, true children of God. Blessed are you for bearing witness to Christ. You are living Gospels that proclaim Jesus’ life, death and resurrection daily either in your family, place of work or on the street. Rejoice for great is your reward in heaven.

May the Beatitudes help us in discovering God’s Kingdom here on earth and may we be worthy to receive our reward in heaven.

“Lord give me the grace I need to follow you from the Mount of the Beatitudes to the cross at Calvary. Help me to bear witness to your love and reward me with life eternal.”

Jesus Calms The Storm (Mark 4:39)

"Master don’t you care if we sink?"
(Mark 4:38)

This is one of my favourite passages in the Gospels, because it portrays the humanness of Jesus. Jesus is equally God and man; the human side of him was tired and required rest so he sleeps. I know the Holy Spirit speaks to each one of us differently so there are different interpretations of what people read. Some people interpret this passage as, God is asleep, and that is not true.

Imagine the scene, the disciples get into a boat that Jesus is already sitting in, some bibles have it as ‘they took Jesus along’. Notice that there were other boats too. In no time, a gale arrives. Jesus is asleep on the cushion. What a marvelous sight that must have been, God peacefully asleep or rather resting in the middle of a storm! It is also the only place in the Bible where Jesus is asleep. The disciples woke him up saying, “Master, don’t you care if we sink?” and then Jesus rebuked the storm.

When you decide to go along with Jesus, I guarantee there will be storms some as big as gales. You will face rough seas, people will be against you, and evil forces will try to rock your boat. The reason why Jesus was sound asleep was that He trusted in the Father’s love. He was certain that God would lead them safely to shore. The disciples were afraid, but they also knew that Jesus could save them that is the reason they question Him in that fashion, ‘Master don’t you care if we sink?’ Fear comes from a lack of faith and trust in God. As faith grows, fear should lessen until we reach a point of peace. A ‘peace’ that assures us of God’s powerful presence. St. John writes, “perfect love will cast out all fear.” Fear is looking at the storm. Faith is looking at the Saviour and keeping our eyes on Him during the storm.

Jesus can calm all the storms in our lives, we only have to call out to Him as the disciples did. Remember there were other boats too, the question is, “Is Jesus in my boat???” -- He had better be! With Jesus in our boat, we can conquer any storm in life. Jesus promised us a safe arrival not a smooth journey!

Lord Jesus, sometimes I just can’t rise above the challenges I face in my life. The trials seem so hard and my destination too far. Help me look beyond the obstacles that blur my vision of you. Raise me up so I can keep my gaze fixed on you.”

You Raise Me Up - The Lion King

This one is for you Dad!

Love you forever

I Am The Good Shepherd

Surely it is fitting that Christ should be a shepherd, for just as a flock is guided and fed by a shepherd so the faithful are fed by Christ with spiritual food and with his own body and blood. The Apostle said: You were once like sheep without a shepherd, but now you have returned to the guardian and ruler of your souls. The prophet has said: As a shepherd, he pastures his flock.

Christ said that the shepherd enters through the gate and that he is himself the gate as well as the shepherd. Then it is necessary that he enter through himself. By so doing, he reveals himself, and through himself, he knows the Father. But we enter through him because through him we find happiness.

Take heed: no one else is the gate but Christ. Others reflect his light, but no one else is the true light. John the Baptist was not the light, but he bore witness to the light. It is said of Christ, however: He was the true light that enlightens every man. For this reason, no one says that he is the gate; this title is Christ’s own. However, he has made others shepherds and given that office to his members; for Peter was a shepherd, and so were the other apostles and all good bishops after them. Scripture says: I shall give you shepherds according to my own heart. Although the bishops of the Church, who are her sons, are all shepherds, nevertheless Christ refers only to one person in saying: I am the Good Shepherd, because he wants to emphasize the virtue of charity. Thus, no one can be a good shepherd unless he is one with Christ in charity. Through this, we become members of the true shepherd.

The duty of a good shepherd is charity; therefore, Christ said: The good shepherd gives his life for his sheep. Know the difference between a good and a bad shepherd: the good shepherd cares for the welfare of his flock, but the bad shepherd cares only for his own welfare.

The Good Shepherd does not demand that shepherds lay down their lives for real flock of sheep. But every spiritual shepherd must endure the loss of his bodily life for the salvation of the flock, since the spiritual good of the flock is more important that the bodily life of the shepherd, when danger threatens the salvation of the flock. This is why the Lord says: The good shepherd lays down his life, that is, his physical life, for his sheep; this he does because of his authority and love. Both, in fact, are required: that they should be ruled by him, and that he should love them. The first without the second is not enough.

Christ stands out for us as the example of this teaching: If Christ laid down his life for us, so we also ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.

Help Build Up One Another (Hebrews 10:24)

We must consider how to rouse one another to love and good works.
(Hebrews 10:24)

Jesus’ death and resurrection has opened wide the door to forgiveness of sins, and so given us access to enter into the presence of compassionate God. The message is simple and straightforward but sometime we fail to see the opened door. That is where our brothers and sisters in Christ come in.

As Christians, we ought to have a tender concern for one another. We should affectionately consider the several wants, weaknesses and temptations of our brethren in order to build them up with love and holiness, not to reproach or provoke them in anger. Leaving a good example for others to follow is the best and most effectual provocation to love and good works. The aim of our lives is not just loving and doing good deeds, but helping to stir up others to love and do good deeds. We ourselves should Draw near in Faith, Hold fast in Hope and Stimulate to Love.

Praying for the other is one way to begin with. You could also advice a troubled friend by saying, “You seem pretty burdened lately. Have you thought about going to confession?”

Try taking someone to Church. Tell a friend that you will be going to Mass after your shift is over, how about he joining you. Remember that one Mass heard in your lifetime is worth more than, many offered for you after your death.

Encourage one another, with words of wisdom. Sometimes compliments help a lot. You could say, “Somehow you always seem to have a bigger perspective than I do. I really appreciate the way you help expand my vision.”

Many times simple words of encouragement help others get through a weary day. Your words could help them hang in through a challenging time. In all these ways and many more, we can all “rouse one another” to a deeper surrender to the Lord!

"We are living a Gospel
A chapter each day,
By deed that we do,
By word that we say;

Men read what we live,
Whether faithless or true,
Say! What is the Gospel
According to you?

“Lord, I want to be where your people are gathered in your name. Help me to give and receive the encouragement that will make all of us better stewards of the gifts you have given.”

Hail Mary - Blessed Are You..

“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.” (Luke 1:42)

The words ‘blessed are you among women’ is used only thrice in the whole Bible, twice in the Old Testament and once in the New. Moreover, there is a common thread between all the three women to which it is used.

The first is found in the Song of Deborah, composed when Jael nailed Sisera’s head to the ground with a tent peg. It reads, “Blessed among women be Jael, blessed among tent-dwelling women” (Judges 5:24).

The second is from the book of Judith 13:18 (Catholic Bible), when Judith beheaded Holofernes, the Assyrian enemy and brought back his head in a bag for all Israel to see, it was said: “Blessed are you, daughter, by the Most High God, above all the women on earth, and blessed be the Lord God, the creator of heaven and earth.” Now the similarity between these two is that they destroyed the enemy of their people by striking at their heads.

The third woman is Mother Mary. Her cousin Elizabeth greeted her by saying, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!” (Luke 1:42) There are numerous images of the Immaculate Conception, one of which portrays Mary standing with her one foot on the head of the deadly serpent. In the very first book of the Bible, Genesis 3:15 the Lord said to the serpent – “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will strike at your head, while you strike at his heel.” (There is a scene in the movie Passion of Christ, where Jesus crushes the serpent to death with His heel)

There is an older version of the English translation, made from the Latin Vulgate that reads, “She shall strike at your head, while you strike at her heel.” Some images show Mother Mary standing with baby Jesus in her arms and the heel of her foot is crushing the head of the serpent, Satan. The meaning of the image is that the woman has conquered in her son, while her son has conquered in his mother. Jesus crushed the head of Satan. On the cross, Jesus created Grace, for all humankind. Jesus in his saving work at Calvary created the Graces that his mother enjoyed, one of which is the Immaculate Conception of his own Mother. And that makes her Kecharitomene.

So the correct translation of the passage in Genesis 3:15 should read, “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will strike at your head, while you strike at his heel.” Satan attacked the heel of Jesus, his humanity. The heel was considered the weak part of the body. But at the same time, Jesus crushed the head of Satan, by his death and resurrection in his humanity, and created all Grace. He broke the power of sin and death and of Satan. It was in creating Grace that Jesus struck the head of Satan.

By this Grace, Satan failed to have any influence on Mary. It was not Mary who struck the head of Satan but it was Jesus who crushed the head of Satan through the Immaculate Conception of his mother. This gift of Jesus for his mother was the most beautiful of all his Graces. And that is why she proclaimed, “For he has looked upon his servant in her lowliness; all ages to come shall call me blessed.”

“Hail Mary, full of grace! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us, sinners, now and at the hour of our death!”

Devotion Must Be Practised In Different Ways - St. Francis De Sales

When God the Creator made all things, he commanded the plants to bring forth fruit each according to its own kind; he has likewise commanded Christians, who are the living plants of his Church, to bring forth the fruits of devotion, each one in accord with his character, his station and his calling.

I say that devotion must be practised in different ways by the nobleman and by the working man, by the servant and by the prince, by the widow, by the unmarried girl and by the married woman. But even this distinction is not sufficient; for the practice of devotion must be adapted to the strength, to the occupation and to the duties of each one in particular.

Tell me, please, my Philothea, whether it is proper for a bishop to want to lead a solitary life like a Carthusian; or for married people to be no more concerned than a Capuchin about increasing their income; or for a working man to spend his whole day in church like a religious; or on the other hand for a religious to be constantly exposed like a bishop to all the events and circumstances that bear on the needs of our neighbour. Is not this sort of devotion ridiculous, unorganised and intolerable? Yet this absurd error occurs very frequently, but in no way does true devotion, my Philothea, destroy anything at all. On the contrary, it perfects and fulfils all things. In fact if it ever works against, or is inimical to, anyone’s legitimate station and calling, then it is very definitely false devotion.

The bee collects honey from flowers in such a way as to do the least damage or destruction to them, and he leaves them whole, undamaged and fresh, just as he found them. True devotion does still better. Not only does it not injure any sort of calling or occupation, it even embellishes and enhances it.

Moreover, just as every sort of gem, cast in honey, becomes brighter and more sparkling, each according to its colour, so each person becomes more acceptable and fitting in his own vocation when he sets his vocation in the context of devotion. Through devotion your family cares become more peaceful, mutual love between husband and wife becomes more sincere, the service we owe to the prince becomes more faithful, and our work, no matter what it is, becomes more pleasant and agreeable.

It is therefore an error and even a heresy to wish to exclude the exercise of devotion from military divisions, from the artisans’ shops, from the courts of princes, from family households. I acknowledge, my dear Philothea, that the type of devotion which is purely contemplative, monastic and religious can certainly not be exercised in these sorts of stations and occupations, but besides this threefold type of devotion, there are many others fit for perfecting those who live in a secular state.

Therefore, in whatever situations we happen to be, we can and we must aspire to the life of perfection.

French Jew Defends The Pope

One of France’s leading intellectuals, Bernard-Henri LĂ©vy has come to the defense of the Catholic Church and Pope Benedict XVI. In an interview with the Spanish newspaper ABC, the Jewish writer said that Catholicism is “the most attacked religion in Europe.” He said it was unfortunate that so many injustices were being committed against the Holy Father.

LĂ©vy said, “The Pope’s voice is extremely important, and we are very unjust to this Pope. I am not Catholic, but I think there is prejudice and especially major anti-clericalism that is taking on enormous proportions in Europe.”

“In France there is much talk about the desecrations of Jewish and Muslim cemeteries, but nobody knows that the tombs of Catholics are continually desecrated. There is a sort of anti-clericalism in France that is not healthy at all.” He added, “We have the right to criticize religions, but the scale of the criticism is out of proportion.”

* LĂ©vy has in the past voiced his support for the construction of the mosque at Ground Zero in New York, but has publicly objected to the full-face veil or burkha. He is often referred to as BHL, and was one of the leaders of the ‘Nouvelle Philosophie’ movement in 1976.

Mysterious Apocalyptic Phenomena

This year 2011 started with mysterious deaths in the animal kingdom. Some are calling it the ‘Mysterious Apocalyptic Phenomena’. Once again, the End Times, End of Days... news is flashing on billboards and newspapers. Since I have been trailing these phenomena from day one, I thought I would share the findings so far.
Scientist claim that this is not new, animal die-offs happen every year mainly due to climatic changes. This year however the die-offs are unusual and so it the freezing weather. Fish and birds are the ones exposed in this extreme cold climate.
Fish are cold blooded and cannot maintain their body heat; their body temperature is the same as the waters they swim in. Take for example a Fish Tank, if the water temperature in the tank is 20 degrees Celsius the body heat of the fish is also 20 degree C that is the reason why we put heaters in the fish tanks so the fish can stay warm in freezing weather.
Unlike fish, most birds migrate from freezing climates to warmer locations reason is in search of food and not to stay warm. Of course, they need enough food to build and maintain adequate fat supplies for their bodies and to provide enough energy to keep them flying and looking for more food. Cardinals, blue jays, nuthatches, wrens, robins and sparrows who may have spent their summers nesting locally, stay behind in areas where the winter temperatures often go below zero. Not all feathered friends travel by air; the penguins migrate through the sea. Thus resulting in penguin deaths and birds unable to keep themselves warm during this frozen weather. Also, consider that these events are happening in populated areas, how many of these animals are dying in places far away from human eyes?
There is also a possibility that the birds and fish are getting confused because of a slight shift in the magnetic poles. Others believe that this is a sign that a massive earthquake is about to strike. There was one in Pakistan on 18 January measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale. Indeed, some of the incidents do occur over fault lines. Check here to see updated earthquakes around the globe.
An Inland Tsunami in Queensland resulted in flash floods. 75% of Queensland was declared a disaster zone and close to 3 million fled to safer locations. A series of floods and mudslides hit Brazil killing hundreds and left 3000 people homeless. At the same time there was flooding in Sri Lanka bringing the country to a standstill.
There is freak phenomenon around the world, but be assured it is not the End Times, and pay no attention to evangelist quoting bible verses and distributing flyers. Rumors too are making their rounds. Moreover, remember nature has a way with controlling population. This should only be an eye opener to get our lives on the right track. Pray more live Christ – centered lives and walk in faith, God is still on His throne!

Tithe Or Tip

Where There Is Faith - 4Him

I believe in faithfulness
I believe in giving of myself for someone else
I believe in peace and love
I believe in honesty and trust but it’s not enough
For all that I believe may never change the way it is
Unless I believe Jesus lives

Where there is faith
There is a voice calling, keep walking
You’re not alone in this world
Where there is faith
There is a peace like a child sleeping
Hope everlasting in He who is able to
Bear every burden, to heal every hurt in my heart
It is a wonderful, powerful place
Where there is faith

There is a man across the sea
Never heard the sound of freedom ring
Only in his dreams
There’s a lady dressed in black
In a motorcade of Cadillacs
Daddy’s not coming back
Our hearts begin to fall
And our stability grows weak
But Jesus meets our needs if only we believe

Where there is faith
There is a voice calling, keep walking
You’re not alone in this world
Where there is faith
There is a peace like a child sleeping
Hope everlasting in He who is able to
Bear every burden, to heal every hurt in my heart
It is a wonderful, powerful place
Where there is faith

Pope John Paul II's First Approved Miracle

London, Jan 18 : A French Catholic nun has credited late Pope John Paul with curing her of Parkinson’s disease, and also giving her a 'second birth'.

Sister Marie Simon-Pierre, 49, who was about to quit working because of her ailment, woke up in June 2005, two months after the Polish-born pope had died, to find that she had been cured of the disease she had been suffering from for four-years.

“When I woke up, I felt I was not the same,” the Telegraph quoted her as telling a news conference at the bishop’s office in a southern French city.

“There was no more heaviness in my muscles, I could move normally. For me it was a new birth, a second birth,” she said.

John Paul’s successor, Pope Benedict XVI, approved a decree last Friday declaring her healing a miracle and attributing it to the late pontiff, clearing the way for him to be beatified on May 1.

“Since my healing, many requests for prayers have come in from many countries. To all these ill people, I’d like to say they must not give up. At the end of the tunnel, there is always a little light,” Simon-Pierre added. (ANI)

Rome Expects 2 Million Pilgrims On John Paul II Beatification Day

VATICAN CITY – Pope Benedict XVI on Friday signed off on the miracle needed to beatify Pope John Paul II, and set May 1 as the date to honor one of the most beloved popes of all times as a model of saintliness for the church.

He said in a decree that a French nun's recovery from Parkinson's disease was miraculous, the last step needed for beatification. A second miracle is needed for the Polish-born John Paul to be made a saint.

The May 1 ceremony, which Pope Benedict himself will celebrate, is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of pilgrims to Rome

Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, John Paul's longtime secretary and friend, expressed "huge thanks" to Benedict for the decree. "We are happy today," he said.

Benedict put John Paul on the fast track to possible sainthood just weeks after he died in 2005, responding to the chants of "Santo Subito!" or "Sainthood Now!" that erupted during his funeral that was witnessed by close to 3 million pilgrims from around the globe. The biggest turnout ever in Rome.

Benedict waived the typical five-year waiting period before the process could begin, but he insisted that the investigation into John Paul's life be thorough so as not leave any doubts about his virtues.

John Paul's beatification will nevertheless be the fastest on record, coming just over six years after his death and beating out Mother Teresa's then-record beatification in 2003 by a few days.

The last remaining hurdle in John Paul's case concerned the approval by Vatican-appointed panels of doctors and theologians, cardinals and bishops that the cure of French nun, Sister Marie Simon-Pierre, was a miracle due to the intercession of the late pope.

The nun has said she felt reborn when she woke up two months after John Paul died, cured of the disease that had made walking, writing and driving a car nearly impossible. She and her fellow sisters of the Congregation of Little Sisters of Catholic Maternity Wards had prayed to John Paul, who also suffered from Parkinson's.

Crowd control experts are rushing to ready Rome for an estimated 2 million pilgrims for the beatification on May 1, when the city will still be jammed with Easter week tourists.

Civil defense staff are expected to meet pilgrims' buses and channel them down selected streets to the square. Easter is April 24, meaning Rome's hotels will be largely full, so organizers might look to Romans to open their homes to pilgrims.

Prayer to Mary Help of Christians

There is nothing sweeter
than to greet you,
O most loving Mother Mary
at the dawn of the day…
and like little children
to throw ourselves on your breast
knowing that with you there is refuge
from any danger to soul or body!
Oh what a consolation it is
to know that even in the heat of the day
we may greet you once more,
invoking your beautiful name
as our powerful help on life’s journey!
What joy is ours when evening shadows fall
and we can abandon ourselves once more
into your loving arms, so calm and tender,
O most loving mother,
may we sleep in peace on your consoling breast!

Amen

Milk Grotto, Bethlehem

I stumbled upon a post on a Catholic blog that spoke or rather joked about a Church named Milk of Our Lady. Apparently, the author of that blog was unaware that there is a Church by that name. Yes, there is a ‘Milk Grotto’, officially called ‘Magharet Sitti Mariam in the Holy Land, on Milk Grotto Street, Bethlehem, West Bank.

Tradition has it that, ‘Milk Grotto’ is the place where the Holy Family took refuge just before their ‘escape to Egypt during the Slaughter of the Innocents. They believe that, while Mary stopped in this cave to nurse baby Jesus, a drop of milk fell to the ground turning it (ground/stone) white.

The grotto has been a site of veneration since the 4th century. The first structure built over it was in 385 AD. In 1375, the site was recognized by a proclamation of Pope Gregory XI. There is a church above the grotto built by the Franciscans in 1872. In 2007, a modern chapel dedicated to the Mother of God was constructed which is connected to the Milk Grotto church by an underground tunnel, enabling the addition of a further chapel in the basement.

Jesus The Healer

Jesus the Healer is here in our midst,
As He has promised to be,
Standing among us with arms open wide,
Giving His love so free.

Who could refuse such tender love?
Where is the person so whole?
Come all you sick, come all you troubled,
Let Jesus enter your soul.

We are all fraught by the cares of the world,
Tension and turmoil and din,
Now let us rest in His glorious love,
Quietly listen to Him.

Who could refuse such tender love?
Where is the person so whole?
Come all you sick, come all you troubled,
Let Jesus enter your soul.

We can rely on the power of His love,
Brought by His Spirit divine,
Cleansing from sins and thus making us whole.
Jesus, all glory is Thine.

Who could refuse such tender love?
Where is the person so whole?
Come all you sick, come all you troubled,
Let Jesus enter your soul.

Glorious Father of such perfect love,
Given by your Son,
Brought by Your Spirit and healing us now,
Praise be to God, three in one.

Who could refuse such tender love?
Where is the person so whole?
Come all you sick, come all you troubled,
Let Jesus enter your soul.

Streets Of Gold - Need To Breathe

I want you to know
I’m leaving to let you go
One day we’ll walk upon
Streets of gold

I don’t remember seeing fear in your eyes
When you were fading
The day we said our goodbyes
It’s easy to say that there’s a reason for this
Much harder to know
That what we say is true

Everything we hold could someday slip away

I want you to know
I’m leaving to let you go
And someday we’ll walk upon
The streets of gold

Running through your veins was a slow-ticking clock
Counting down the days
And no one could make it stop
All of the time that it takes to figure it out
Could be the moments
That you can’t live without

Everything we hold could someday slip away

I want you to know
I’m leaving to let you go
And someday we’ll walk upon
The streets of gold

The trouble with love is that it comes to an end
I’ve got a feeling I’m gonna find you again
Just in a place where love can’t die

Why Confess To A Priest?

The other day I came across some kind of an ‘Evangelist’, from the way he spoke I knew the sect he came from. I have had plenty of experiences at my workplace with these folks. I actually love to chat with the knowledgeable ones. The others have no foundation and crash-land when arguing with a Bible Believing Staunch Catholic.

Apparently, I was returning from a Reconciliation Service (not confession) we have it once a month in church. Somehow, these so called, Evangelist always and forever find a Catholic church for their tricks of illusion. I wish they could go to non-believers instead. I don’t usually talk to strangers, but do stop to help someone in need, and from the looks of it, he did seem lost to me. Someone told him that we were having confessions (I think he was mixed up with the word), so maybe he was there to frighten the flock and dissuade them). Coincidentally the priest conducting the Reconciliation Service emphasized a lot on our Baptismal call. He spoke of how Jesus began his ministry after John baptized him. He even spoke of John shouting in the wilderness and Jesus whose very life was the pulpit. Where do we categorize ourselves???

Out of all the sheep out there, this chap had to find me… [maybe the Holy Spirit led him... ;)] He came straight to the point, “why do I need to go to a priest for confession. If I believe that God forgives sins and I have accepted Jesus as my Saviour, my sins are forgiven, then why go to a priest?” Hmmm, this was not the first time I’ve been asked this question, so by now I was well versed with answering it. – Well, I said, because James 5:16 says, we have to confess our sins to each other and pray for each other so that we may be healed and the prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. I cannot confess my sins to a friend or any other person for that matter, what if he betrays me someday. However, by office the priest is under a confessional seal, he cannot disclose the words spoken to him at a confessional. Period! The other thing is that there is none as holy, anointed, constantly praying for us and offering sacrifices to God on our behalf as a priest does. When Jesus healed the man with skin disease in (Mark 1:44) he says, go show yourself to a priest and offer a sacrifice as a testimony. Jesus himself healed the man, then why go to a priest, like you said “God forgives then why go to a priest…” When Jesus breathed the Holy Spirit on his disciples he told them, “if you forgive anyone’s sins they are forgiven”, that was the ministry of reconciliation, he could have easily said it on the day of Pentecost with hundreds of people around why only to the disciples... Because they were the chosen ones, the same way the Levites were and similarly Paul and Barnabas who were chosen by the elders by laying of hands and consecration.. and so is the priest who is a representative of the Church, which is the body of Christ. Yes, I could also tell you, who are the Patriarchs, Apostles, Pauls and Timthonys in the Catholic church…if you want? :D

He just stood awestruck I guess, or maybe it was going over his head, whatever. More than awestruck it seemed lightning-struck, it happens when you bite off more than you can chew. His eyes welled up, I thought he was going to break down. He tried to have the last word by saying, “You are one Catholic who knows the Bible, I thought the Catholic Church discouraged bible reading.” I said, “Well, it’s the same Catholic Church that has been feeding me the W-O-R-D daily and not just on Sundays like you may think it is…” and boom.. he just turned and walked away.

I know that was sharp, but hey I’ve been sharpening my sword (Hebrews 4:12) for so long now, gotta use it when need be… ;))

Note: I have absolutely nothing against other Christian sects I love them; we all belong to one fold. Just that some of them want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm (1Timothy 1:7). I only spoke the truth, St. Paul says (2 Tim 2:15) “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”

Meteorologists fail to explain descending of the cloud on supposed place of the Lord's Transfiguration

Moscow, January 11, 2011, Interfax - Science cannot explain a mystery of the cloud, that every year descends on Mount Tabor where, according to the Bible, the Transfiguration of the Lord took place.

Sergey Mirov, a participant in the research organized this summer by the working group on miraculous signs at the Synodal Theological Commission, the investigation was conducted by Russian and Israeli meteorologists, the Komsomolskaya Pravda daily writes.

According to him, summing up the results, the experts concluded that fog cannot be generated in such dry air and temperature.

Mirov stressed that the "descending of the blessed cloud" takes place only in the territory of the Orthodox monastery. He said that during the festival service (the miraculous phenomenon happens on the Orthodox feast of Transfiguration) a glaring sphere rushes over believers, then the cloud appears above the cross of the
Transfiguration Church, it grows in dimensions and descends on believers, covering them and pouring life-giving moisture over them.

In his turn
Pavel Florensky, Russian Academy of Natural Sciences academician and head of the working group on miraculous signs, said that his team examined the appearance of the Holy Fire at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem on Easter eve with the help of modern highly accurate equipment.

"The conclusion is simple: the appearance of fire is accompanied with powerful piezoelectrical phenomenon in the church and adjacent territories similar to those that take place during thunderstorms, but there was no thunderstorm... Thus, it means that this event can be considered miraculous," he believes.

The video below is in Russian. It describes the whole phenomenon.

Jesus Drives Out An Evil Spirit (Mark 1:21-28)

What is man that you are mindful of him,
the son of man that you care for him?
you made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
and crowned him with glory and honour.
You made him ruler over the works of your hands;
You put everything under his feet-
(Psalm 8:5-7)

This psalm speaks of the glory of God. It also shows how God has honored man in the person of Christ his only begotten Son. The first reading of today (Tue, OrdTime Wk1) from the letter to the Hebrews, explains this Psalm of David. (Hebrews 2:5-12)

In today’s Gospel, Jesus drives out an evil spirit (Mark 1:21-28). It is the first miracle of Jesus in the Gospel of Mark. Jesus is in Capernaum, preaching and teaching with authority in the synagogue. In the midst of it, an unclean spirit cried out, saying, "What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are the Holy One of God.” Imagine if that would have happened in our church. Someone would have thrown that person outside. Worse if, anyone of us would have sided with him. Today who would actually know the difference between an unclean spirit and a Holy Spirit from God? Moreover, the words of Scripture “For this people's heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them” (Matthew 13:15) would be fulfilled. But Jesus knew the difference!

The words spoken by the unclean spirit, was evident enough to know that they had the knowledge of God, but lacked in charity and righteousness. They feared their punishment from God. They knew who Jesus was to a certain degree. “Jesus was not known to them as to the holy Angels, who enjoy Him by partaking of His eternity according as He is the Word of God; but as He was to be made known in terror, to those beings from whose tyrannical power He was about to free the predestinate.”(St. Augustine)

He was known therefore to the devils, not in that He is eternal Life, (1John 5:20. John 17:3) but by some temporal effects of His Power, which might be more clear to the angelic senses (there is no other word to describe it) of even bad spirits than to the weakness of men. Moreover, the Truth did not wish to have the witness of unclean spirits.

In conclusion, there are those who know about God and what He is like, but have not experienced His love and mercy. And there are those who know God personally. They enjoy in His abundant graces and believe in the eternal Life He has granted us.

Question is Do you really know God or do you just know about God and fear your punishment from Him?

"Jesus, all praise and glory belongs to your holy name! I am so blessed to have seen your salvation. I am so honored to have received your redemption. I want to sing of your marvelous deeds! Yours is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever. Amen!"
